In mid-January, we spent a beautiful morning in Hyannis Port doing one of our favorite kinds of Cape Cod activities - showing up for the place we love.
We joined the Town of Barnstable for a cleanup at Eugenia Fortes Beach, working alongside a wonderful group of volunteers representing several organizations: Barnstable Land Trust, Barnstable Ponds Coalition, Keep Barnstable Beautiful, AmeriCorps Cape Cod, Barnstable Association for Recreational Shellfishing, and the Cape Cod Maritime Museum.

At first glance, the beach looked pristine - honestly, it didn’t seem like there would be much to do. But once we got started, we quickly realized how much trash was tucked out of sight, especially caught in the bushes along the parking lot. By the end of the morning, we had filled an entire truck. It was equal parts surprising and satisfying (in that “we actually made a difference today” kind of way).

The Town made it easy to jump in by supplying everything we needed: bags, gloves, and pickers. State Representative Steve Xiarhos was also there to help and even supplied the buckets!
If you’d like to see us in action (and the incredible pile of what was collected), Steve Heaslip’s photos captured the morning beautifully in the Cape Cod Times - HERE.

One of the best parts: the Town holds these cleanups at different beaches each month, and they provide the supplies. It’s a simple, feel-good way to spend a morning - and a reminder that taking care of Cape Cod doesn’t always require a big grand gesture. Sometimes it’s just showing up, one bag at a time. You can find more info HERE.
If you hear about an upcoming cleanup (or a local fundraiser, beach day, or organization doing good), please send it our way - I’d love to keep highlighting the people and groups helping Cape Cod stay beautiful. 💙
