Small in size, full of character, and surrounded by sea, Woods Hole is one of those Cape places that’s always worth lingering in a little longer.
There’s something about Woods Hole that feels like a true little Cape adventure. It’s easy to think of it as just the place where you catch the ferry to Martha’s Vineyard, but this tiny village packs in so much more: ocean views, science, history, a working waterfront, and plenty to wander in an afternoon.
Start with the ferry
The Steamship Authority terminal gives Woods Hole its lively, always-in-motion energy. Even if you’re not heading to the Vineyard, it’s fun to watch the boats come and go.

Science is part of the charm
Woods Hole is home to Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (belovedly known as WHOI) and the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL), two world-renowned research centers that have made this tiny village famous far beyond the Cape. (Yes, the MBL link is correct! I had to do a double take when I saw "University of Chicago" at the top of the website. But yes, MBL is in Woods Hole, and is an affiliate of the University of Chicago.) A statue in honor of Rachel Carson, one of Woods Hole's favorite marine biologists, overlooks a cold, foggy morning. You can learn more about the statue HERE.

A note about the aquarium
The Woods Hole Science Aquarium is usually a favorite for visitors and families, though it is currently closed for renovations through early 2027. Once it reopens, it will definitely be worth a stop. One of my favorite experiences was watching the jelly fish. Mesmerizing!

Grab a coffee and wander
Part of the fun in Woods Hole is simply walking around. Pick up a coffee (one of our must-stops is Coffee Obsession - look for their community bulletin board for all the current happenings around town), browse a few gift shops, and enjoy the mix of ferry travelers, scientists, boaters, and locals that gives the village its unique feel. A short stroll offers plenty of gorgeous views and unique finds along the way.

A true working waterfront
You’ll also notice the Coast Guard presence here, which adds to Woods Hole’s authentic maritime character.
At the end of the bike path
Woods Hole marks the southern end of the Shining Sea Bikeway, making it a great destination for a scenic ride. We always start our bike ride in North Falmouth, and 10.5 miles later when we arrive at Woods Hole, we love to stop at Pie in the Sky for a sweet treat before making our way back. There are plenty of bike racks available. (And stay tuned - we'll be sharing more on the Shining Sea Bikeway coming next month, just in time for a very big birthday!)

Fun events to look out for
Throughout the year, Woods Hole also hosts some wonderful community events. Summer brings the Woods Hole Film Festival and theater performances, while the Fourth of July parade and holiday celebrations add even more small-town charm.

Don’t miss Nobska Light
Just outside the village, Nobska Lighthouse is one of the prettiest stops in the area, with sweeping views over Vineyard Sound. It’s the kind of place that feels like classic Cape Cod.

A few practical tips before you go:
Woods Hole may be a small village, but it can get busy quickly in the warmer months, so it’s smart to give yourself a little extra time when you visit. Parking in the village is limited (metered and private parking lots), and if you’re planning to take the ferry, be sure to know that you cannot park at the Woods Hole terminal. The Steamship Authority directs ferry passengers to use its off-site parking lots in Falmouth or Cataumet, where free shuttle service is provided to the terminal.

Small but full of character, Woods Hole is more than just a ferry stop - it’s a Cape escape all its own. 💙
