This month’s Cape Heartbeat shines on Colorful Kidz, a Cape Cod nonprofit bringing comfort, joy, and a whole lot of color to children who need it most.
Through personalized room makeovers, Colorful Kidz transforms bedrooms into bright, welcoming spaces where children can feel safe, seen, and inspired. Many of the kids they serve are facing difficult life transitions - from foster care and medical challenges to trauma or financial hardship - and each makeover is designed around the child’s own personality, interests, hopes, and dreams.
It is more than paint, pillows, and pretty details. It is the magic of having a space that feels truly your own.
Behind every Colorful Kidz room makeover is an incredible team of volunteers - painters, organizers, decorators, builders, and big-hearted helpers who bring each child’s dream space to life.
Their time, talent, and care turn ordinary rooms into places of comfort, joy, and possibility.
And in a season when the Cape itself is bursting into bloom, Colorful Kidz feels like the perfect story to share - a beautiful reminder that color has power. It can lift spirits, spark imagination, and bring light into places that need it most.
Their flagship fundraiser, Cape Cod Flippz, is also coming up - and it is every bit as colorful and creative as the name suggests. Now in its 5th year, this furniture-flipping competition invites teams of woodworkers, painters, designers, thrifters, and DIY enthusiasts to hunt for secondhand pieces, transform them over two weeks, and then sell their finished creations to benefit Colorful Kidz.
The fun begins with Shopping Day on May 30, followed by two weeks of magical transformations from June 1–14.
And finally, the big Showtime event on June 20, where the finished pieces will be displayed and sold. A beautiful full-circle fundraiser: forgotten furniture becomes something wonderful, and the proceeds help create joyful new spaces for Cape Cod kids.
