On Cape Cod, comfort sometimes arrives on four paws.
I had the great pleasure of meeting Nelli at Freeman Johnson's 106 birthday celebration this past month. She sat beside him with a loving gaze sending him all the birthday love!

Nelli is a Certified Therapy Dog through the Companion Animal Program of Cape Cod. Nelli and her friends were there to wish Freeman Johnson a happy birthday and greet and interact with all of his guests.
The Companion Animal Program of Cape Cod, also known as CAP, is a volunteer-driven nonprofit that brings trained therapy dogs and their handlers to hospitals, assisted living communities, schools, libraries, and other local programs from Bourne to Provincetown. For 40 years, CAP has helped brighten lives through visits that offer companionship, calm, and connection.

What makes the program especially meaningful is the care behind it. CAP teams must complete training, evaluation, and orientation before visiting approved sites. Dogs are required to earn the AKC Canine Good Citizen certificate first, and the organization uses a structured seven-week course to prepare handlers and dogs for therapy work.
Nelli has the sweetest demeanor, and it was no surprise the children flocked to her, drawn in by her lovely presence.

CAP also shares an important reminder: therapy dogs are different from service dogs. These visiting teams are trained to bring comfort and joy to others in community settings, whether that means offering stress relief to students, companionship to older adults, or a friendly presence during a difficult day.
If you love seeing the many ways people and animals make Cape Cod stronger, CAP is a wonderful example of that connection in action. Learn more, request a visit, volunteer, or support their mission at the Companion Animal Program website.
