This month's current Cape View starts off with a grand celebration! Barnstable's own Freeman Johnson, one of the oldest Pearl Harbor Survivors, turned 106! The community showed up in full force, sharing lots of love for this American Hero.
It was an afternoon filled with smiles, songs and salutes. Bottom right - Freeman with his family, with Representative Kip Diggs on the phone singing Happy Birthday.
After a long winter, the signs of Spring are a welcome sight! Boats are being prepped - not long now before these docks are full...

The ospreys have returned! My official "osprey day" was on Sunday, April 12th this year. A day I look forward to every year - indicating nicer weather ahead. Shown here filling up on the herring buffet...

...and the herring! They are now running! The spring migration is in full swing. You can witness their amazing determination and energy as they swim upstream at 41 sites across the Cape. I was mesmerized watching them jump up and over the fish ladders as they were making their way up to Mill Pond in Marstons Mills.

Some sites utilize electronic fish counters to monitor the herring count, but many still deploy volunteers to manually count the fish as they swim by. The Barnstable Clean Water Coalition's team of volunteers head out to count for 10-minute shifts. With clicker in hand, they count each fish as they jump over the white board at Mill Pond, shown top photo below. Bottom - one of the many volunteers, Dr. Mike, showing his final counter tally after his 10-minute shift. Want to get involved? A lone sunbather soaking up the rays on our first sunny, 67 degree day. After the winter we had, it felt like a proper summer day. These beaches will be full soon - it's nice to be able to advantage of having a private beach on this gorgeous off-season day...

A beautiful, serene scene in the historic Spring Hill section of Sandwich. The trees are budding, the geese are laying, and flowers are blooming. Happy Spring!
